Persistent pain at the front of the shoulder with weakness and limited mobility can be associated with an injury to the rotator cuff.
The rotator cuff is made up of tendons that protect and hold the shoulder in place, and allows you to lift and turn your arm. It can become damaged by natural ageing or excessive wear, which can occur in sports or occupations that entail repetitive movements of the shoulder.
The main symptoms are:
- Pain at the front of the shoulder that spreads into the arm
- A feeling of weakness
- Being unable to move your shoulder fully, i.e. lifting the arm above the head or moving it behind the back
A referral to a specialist doctor, functional tests and diagnostic examinations (ultrasound scan, CAT scan, MRI) can provide a diagnosis.
In many cases the shoulder injury can be successfully managed with conservative therapy, particularly if the tear is partial: rest, physiotherapy, a course of anti-inflammatory medication, and targeted infiltrations if necessary.
Taking care of the shoulder means ensuring we have free range of movement!
